He was a good soldier, has a noble heart and has given it away in a manly and becoming manner. His bride is his equal in all those attributes which adorn all social intercourse. Estray notice: the 4th of Feb, 1862 [sic], I George W. Woodard of Fillmore, Fillmore Co, MN, found on my enclosed lands an estray cow, light red, with line back, white belly, both horns broken off, and white star in the forehead. About 12 years old, and no one has claimed such estray and paid the reasonable charges. 4 Feb, 1872, Fillmore, Geo. W. Woodard. Mrs. Flower who has for the last six months devotedly discharged the duties of Matron of the Soldiers' Orphans Home, says the Winona "Republican", has been compelled to give up the position in consequence of ill health. *The terrible storm of Feb 12, entailed loss of life and suffering in Murray County, as elsewhere. Among those who perished was Gustavus Johnson and his son, Mr. Williams, Mr. Taylor, James Ross, one of the Ebersoll boys, and James Robinson (a half breed.) Young Taylor was one of the survivors of a company of soldiers nearly all of whom froze to death in the northern part of the State a few years ago. Land described as follows: the west half of the south west quarter of section three, and the north half of the south east quarter of section four, in township 104, north of range number 13, west. Advertisement: Delos L. Ayer, Daguerrean Artist, Preston, MN, has resumed the business of taking pictures at his old stand opposite Conkey Brothers Store. Also he has opened a Gallery in Lanesboro, and assisted by Mr. Perkins, will continue to take pictures in the best syle know to the art cheaper than has ever been done in either place. Freezing of Two Women: Near Bird Island, Renville Co, sisters of the St. Dennis brothers. One was unmarried, living with her sister, a Mrs. Maloney. They left two children ages 2 and 4 on the bed to go look after the stock, and never returned. The husband had left for Willmar Monday morning and returned Wednesday morning. Last Friday morning, just before Major G.H. Otis took the stage for Decorah, Iowa, where he has gone as associate editor and proprietor of "Republican St. Press", a few of his intimate friends surprised him with the presentation of substantial tokens of their regards. The occurrence will linger in h is memory as one of the pleasant incidents in his life. We wish him prosperity in his new field of labor. Republican County Convention at Preston, caucus determined the following named persons were entitled to seats as delegates for Preston to the Republican County Convention: N.P. Colburn, H.C. Died: of an eruption of a blood vessel, at his residence in the town of Carrolton, Rev. Eli Engle, 11 May 1872, aged 54 years, 9 months, 16 days. He was born in Alleghany Co, Maryland 25 Sept. 1817, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at a camp meeting at Western Port, Maryland. An endorsement of Mr. M.H. Dunnell: the only objection we have heard is that he appointed two Norwegians as assessor and mail agents on the railroad. The first [ Capt. Grinauger of Albert Lea] was a brave commander of a company in Col. Hague's 15th Wisconsin Scandanavian Regiment, which was assigned to duty in the same division in which we [the editor, W.A. Hotchkiss] had the honor to serve against the Rebellion. For 3 years we knew him in the army where he earned the recognition of all good American citizens. Died: at the residence of H.A. Billings, in Preston, Friday, May 31, 1872, of congestion of the lungs, H.J. Larsen aged 23 years, 7 months. The deceased was deputy clerk of the District Court in the office of H.A. Billings, Esq., for a year. He was buried by Preston Lodge No 36 A:F and A:M of whom he was a worthy officer and brother. Died: in Spring Valley Monday morning, June 3, 1872, of consumption, George Dwight Wilder, aged 28 years. The burial was last Tuesday, funeral sermon by Elder Farnsworth.

Died: in Preston, June 8, 1872, in the 66th year of her age, Mrs. Jane B. Price, wife of Mr. A.E. Price. [posted in the Fillmore County Republican, June 14, 1872, Vol 11, No 33, p 3, col 3]

Wednesday evening at 8 PM, two prisoners confined in jail in this village escaped: Bagley (from Houston Co, charged with forgery) and Lorenzo Sharp (charged with the arson in Spring Valley of J.D. Farmer's barn, including horse and cow.) They cut through the bottom of the empty, out-of-repair water tank above the water closets...Sheriff Gullickson was away all Wednesday; they had time to cut through the tank and then the one inch-thick pine roof. Last Saturday, Sharp was captured near St. Charles, Winona County, and taken to Spring Valley by Sheriff Crippin. He escaped from the wagon 3 miles from Preston when the back seat he was sitting on fell off, and he was lost in the woods. Died: in the township of Fountain, Aug 13, 1872, Miss Elizabeth A. Watson, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Watson, aged 44 years, 6 months, 17 days. The immediate cause of death was an internal injury she received from a fall Monday August 3rd. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Preston. Killed: the 4th instant, a telegram was received from Chicago: W.S. Seeley, of Preston, was that day killed by falling from a building upon the erection of which he was an employee. Died: at the home of his son, William P., in Preston, the 15th instant, Jonas Conkey, aged 77 years, 7 months, 13 days. He was born in Bridgeport, Vermont 31 January 1795. His childhood and manhood until 1844 were in Clinton Co, NY, after which he successively lived in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and since 1861 in Minnesota. Information wanted: Adelbert E. Taber, son of B.J. Taber of Newburg, Filmore County, left his home on 28 July and has not since been heard from. He is 15 years old and large of his age, about 160 pounds, is of dark complexion and has a Roman nose. He had with him a suit of heavy gray cloth. Any person having knowledge...address a letter to his father at Hesper P.O., Iowa...young Taber, if living, need have no scruples about returning to those who love him most.
