"A few days ago, Mrs. Martsolf was seriously kicked in the face by a horse which was being led to water by her husband. Two of her teeth were knocked out & a frightful gash cut under her left eye. "Died: in Chatfield, Dec 30, 1870, of consumption, Mrs. Case, wife of Dr. O.A. Case, aged 30 years. Mrs. Case was for several years a resident of Preston, & much respected by all who knew her. "My wife, Betsy Engebretson Anderson, left her home 25 Oct 1870 & has not since been heard from. She was 33 years old, tall, slender, with dark brown hair and blue eyes, and had on when she left a blue shawl. I know of no reason why she should have so mysteriously left her home. Insane: Mrs. C.K. Mack of this place, surprised her friends last Friday evening, at the Methodist donation party, by suddenly showing positive signs of having become a confirmed maniac...She is receiving the kindest attention by those who have long known and respected her. "Died, near Village of Fillmore, Feb 19, 1871, Sarah Louisa, only daughter of Abel & Elsie A. Drew, aged 3 years, 1 month & 2 days." [posted in the Fillmore County Republican, Vol 10, No 18, Mar 3, 1871, p 3 col 2]
"Saturday last week, a lad about 12 years old, son of Mr W.A. Stevens of Buffalo Grove, Town of Carimona, was shockingly injured: he was unloading wood from a pair of bobsleds,..when the team started to run, the boy fell forward on the heels of the horse & under the front bob which caught and dragged him about 10 rods... Dr. Redmon was sent for & found the lad still unconscious, his skull slightly fractured and his jaw broken. "Last Sunday a young child of Mr. John L. Grayling residing near Baldwin's mill, in the town of Forestville, was perhaps fatally burned by being pushed by some other children with whom it was playing in the sugar camp, into a kettle of boiling sugar. Default has been made in the conditions of a certain mortgage, executed and delivered by John Sims, and Elizabeth Sims, his wife, mortgagors of Fillmore Co, MN, to Wm. M. Tallman, mortgagee, which said mortgage bears the date the 19th day of Feb 1866, and was recorded...24th Feb, 1866 in book L of mortgages p 577. The amount claimed to be due on siad mortgage,,, is $397,37. The said mortage will be foreclosed by a sale (the SE quarter of section 29 town 101, range 11 of Fillmore Co)...on the 15th day of Apr 1871. Default has been made in the conditions of a certain mortgage executed and delivered by Knud Nelson Melve, of Fillmore Co, to Lars Olson, bearing date the 5th of Dec 1857 and recorded the 7th of Jan 1868 in book Q of mortgages, p 58, on which mortgage there is claimed to be due the sum of $873.08...Said mortgage will be foreclosed by a sale of the premises the 6th of May 1871...The premises are situated in Fillmore Co and described as the east half of the NE quarter, and the NW quarter of the NE quarter of section 31, and the NW quarter of the NW quarter of section 32 in township 103, range 8 west, constituting one farm. "The little daughter of William Bush of Hay Creek, Goodhue County, died Saturday last from injuries received Thursday. The little girl, less that 2 years old, pulled over upon herself a kettle of boiling water, in which meat was being cooked, and her death was a relief from such physical suffering as can only be imagined." "Died at Hillsdale, Michigan, Mar 8, 1871, Charles R, son of G.B. Kalder, aged 18. The bereaved father is an elder brother of our esteemed fellow-townsman Lieut. A. "Mr. Thomas Plunkett of Fountain, father of Mrs. J.O'Brien of this village, few weeks ago...went alone...to burn some brush and grass. After kindling his fire, being a very old man, becoming fatigued and overcome with the heat and smoke, he fainted and fell into the fire...He managed to get up and reach his home. Dr. Redmon...for 3 weeks daily dressed the burns which healed nicely, but peritonitis inflammation of the bowels terminated the sufferer's life." "Died, near the village of Hamilton, Fillmore County, April 24, 1871 of typhoid fever, John Wesley son of John L. and Mary Ann Green, aged 22 years. The deceased leaves a loving and beloved wife to whom he was wedded about one year ago; also his aged parents and dear brothers and sisters, together with a large circle of kindred and acquaintances to morn their great loss...the funeral was largely attended at the Methodist Chapel in Hamilton April 26. The sermon by Rev. C.D. Farnsworth, Spring Valley, was from the text "If a man died shall he live again?" Job xvi:14th. "Col. H.C. Rogers, deceased at Brownsdale, morning of the 8th, instant. The immediate cause was acute bronchitis, though for 2 years his constitution has been breaking under the incurable disorder known as Bright's disease of the kidneys." "Died: in Amherst, this county, May 7, 1871 of chronic affection [sic] of the liver, Thomas Gilbert, Sr, aged about 65 tears. Mr. Gilbert was one of the earliest settlers in the eastern part of Fillmore County, and a good citizen." [posted in the Fillmore County Republican, May 12, 1871, Vol 10, No 28, p 3, col 1]
The Fillmore County Agricultural Society annual meeting was held last Wednesday...W.A. Hotchkiss, E.D. Hammer, and R. Wells were appointed a committee to revise the constitution and by-laws, with instructions to report the result of their labors to the Society during the holding of the next county fair. Frightful accident: a week ago last Monday on the farm of Capt. W.W. Braden, of Lenora. Two children, a little boy and girl of the Captain's sister, Mrs. Wells, went into a yard where a team was standing hitched to a roller, over which lay the lines, one of each, of which the children caught up and began speaking to the team, which commenced backing the roller toward them. Capt. Braden...called to them to drop the lines and run away. The little boy obeyed just in time to escape, but the little girl was caught by the roller which passed over her...she was crushed under the feet of one of the horses just as Capt. Braden reached the spot. Captain Braden took the child into the house, procured prompt medical aid, but the injury was too great...and the dear child expired about 5 o'clock PM of the same day. Death of a 10 year old boy, son of Mr. Levi of Litchfield, of this county. He had planted some beans in the potato patch, where he had for some days previous been in the habit of picking and killing potato bugs...he came in at noon and ate dinner, became dizzy and went into convulsions and died. Dr. Moore of Spring Valley said the symptoms were that of poison, but he was unable to discover what [kind]. Neighbors' theory is that it was due to inhaling the poisonous odors of crushed potato bugs. On the same day Thomas Masterly of Freesoil Prairie had emptied a pail of potato bugs in the fire and became dizzy and temporarily blind. The show that came to town [Preston] was not what was represented. The dollar store accompanying it is pronounced a swindle...The clothes line of Mrs. C.H. Conkey was robbed of clothing to the value of not less that $10...some of the attachees of the show proved to be hard cases; the robbing is attributed to them. Fatal accident: Mr. Reuben Welch was reaping with his daughter Thursday last week, when the machine tipped partly over, throwing them to the ground. The team started to run, and Mr. Welch's son seized them by the bits and was thrown on the platform of the machine, breaking the reel into fragments and injuring him internally, causing his death in 48 hours. Capt. R. Thomas of Rushford has lost by death his infant twin children, aged only a few months. They died of cholera infantum almost at the same time, there being only 20 minutes between the last pulsation of the heart of the little ones. Friday afternoon, three young ladies of Chatfield, Miss Anna Howell, daughter of Rev. J.L. Howell, Miss Anna Cussons, and Miss Hattie Wilson, with horse and buggy had gone out in search of blackberries...the horse took fright and ran away, upsetting the buggy and killing Miss Howell instantly. Cooley, 3rd son of Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Cooley [overseer of the poor]. The deceased was aged 16 years, 8 months, 11 days. The bereaved parents have met with a great loss. In their deceased child they had discovered elements of character and mind that led them to hope for him a life of more than ordinary usefulness. Already they had begun to plan for his advancement in mental culture, embracing in the ambition for him, a thorough education. For several years she had been an invalid, and was confined to bed for the last 6 weeks of her life. She was buried on the 37th birthday.
